Working on my first query letter

July 2nd, 2008

This morning I started writing my first article query to the local newspaper, and it’s coming along well. I’m using good advice from The Renegade Writer’s Query Letters that Rock book, which is almost as good as its incredibly useful and inspiring predecessor, The Renegade Writer, by Linda Formichelli and Diana Burrell.

I won’t send the query until I have polished my professional website so that I feel comfortable including the link. I want to include that link with every professional query and email that I send out, but it’s been creating a real headache for me as I struggle to follow through with my initial vision for a professional website.

I had a lot of fun coming up with the design and writing the initial copy, but then my Inner Editor took over and smashed my self esteem to bits with criticism like “You’re painting yourself as a seasoned writer; you’re such a liar!” and “Your design looks really stupid” and “They’re all gonna laugh at you!” and “Your portfolio is pitiful” and the familiar “You suck and you’ll never succeed!”

So after 1,496 revisions of each sentence,  I am now at the stage where the site is nearly tolerable except that my portfolio looks heavily biased toward the company that most recently worked for. I suppose the only option is to leave those samples there and add more diverse samples as I create them. I just need to do it, right? Because everyone has to start somewhere.

You have taken the most important step - you started!

By the way, your site design looks nice to me.
