Freelance business writing now in motion
July 9th, 2008I received a phone call out of the blue last week from an executive of my former company. He wanted to know if I would be willing and able to help with website marketing for one of his side ventures.
That makes sense, considering that I worked in the marketing department and (begrudgingly) served as the company’s interim web manager for several months while trying to keep up with my writing and editing tasks. My official title was “Marketing Editor,” though I worked with a lot of departments on a lot of different projects so my role within the company was outwardly confusing. Most people knew me as That Geeky Marketing Person Who Writes And Does Web Stuff.
I was initially hesitant to accept the work because it sounded more focused on web design and analytics than I’m really qualified to take on. But I took the time to understand what his goals were and that helped me to position my services in a way that would benefit him and not get me in over my head.
If I had just said “I’m only interested in writing jobs,” then I would have missed a good opportunity. I have skills in other areas, like marketing and search engine optimization, and it turns out that I’m a good fit for what he didn’t know he was looking for: an independent consultant who can focus his marketing strategy and oversee its implementation on the website. I’ll also have the opportunity to stretch my writing muscles with compelling, keyword-rich web copy.
I’ve participated in a couple conference calls this week and I submitted an initial marketing plan last night that was well-received.
I believe this, in conjunction with the fact that I submitted my first query letter last week, makes me an official freelancer.
Still not a Writer, mind you, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.
