Discovering what it means to be a writer
June 30th, 2008I have wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember. What’s changed over the years, though, is how I perceive what it means to be a writer.
On this blog, I want to explore and document my journey—past, present and future—with an end goal of solidly identifying myself as a writer.
I chose the name “Kinetic Writer” because I recognize that I am a writer in motion; that I have to keep moving if I ever want to reach a point when I can confidently say “I am a writer.” I chose the header image from a photograph that I took last month of a duckling on its own, yet not too far from shore, because that’s where I feel I am now. I’m already in the water with many of the tools needed to survive, but I stay close to shore because I’m nervous about failing.
Someday, I hope that I will fearlessly swim to middle of the lake and even fly off to new adventures on other lakes. I know that I’ll have a flock of supporters and teammates around me most of the time, but ultimately my decision to fly is a personal goal.
For now, I’m building up courage, knowledge, and my writing portfolio to prepare for the future. If there’s anything I’ve learned so far, it’s that you can’t become a writer overnight.
